Promoting China's Climate Action to the World, Vanke Foundation Leaves its Green Footprint at COP29

On November 23, local time, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) concluded in Baku, Azerbaijan, after an additional day of discussions. A new global climate finance target of $300 billion annually was agreed by the parties.

At COP29, Vanke Foundation, a Chinese charity organization dedicated to promoting climate action in Chinese urban communities, organised and participated in seven themed side events at the China Pavilion, the UN Conference Room, and other venues in the Blue Zone. They also facilitated multi-level international dialogues, including two press conferences and an exhibition showcasing the innovative practices and achievements of Chinese social organizations, enterprises, and other non-governmental entities in the climate sector. This showcased a robust and active Chinese civil voice on the international stage.

During the COP, Liu Zhenmin, China’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, attended two side events jointly hosted by Vanke Foundation and China Champions for Climate Action (C Team). He emphasized that "Chinese entrepreneurs can play a key role in international cooperation against climate change."

Wang Shi, founder of Vanke Group and Chairman of Vanke Foundation, also spoke at these events, highlighting the successful implementation of the "Meisha Carbon-Neutral Community" project in Shenzhen. He urged more entrepreneurs and partners to join in promoting the "Green Belt and Road" initiative to help make our planet greener and better.

 

At other side events, Vanke Foundation’s flagship projects, including the "Zero Waste Palace Museum Project," "Carbon Neutral Community Development," and food waste treatment using black soldier flies were introduced to the audiences. These presentations showcased the global potential impact of community-based climate actions in China.

 

Vanke Foundation also held two press conferences in collaboration with partners such as the China Environmental Grantmakers Alliance (CEGA) and the Center for Environmental Education and Communications of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. Reports on "Selected Case Studies of Climate Philanthropy Impact" and the "2024 Beautiful China: I am an Actor" Corporate Climate Action Case Collection," were released, highlighting China's corporate climate responsibility and civil initiatives to international stakeholders.

 

In addition, Vanke Foundation hosted a two-day exhibition in the Blue Zone, featuring creative products from the Zero Waste Palace Museum project, the Mount Qomolangma Snow Leopard Project, and other innovative initiatives. These exhibits were well-received by visitors and effectively communicated the grassroots climate actions in China, offering a window into the country’s civil innovations.

Since 2009, Vanke Foundation has actively participated in UNFCCC COPs for eleven consecutive years, sharing inspiring stories of Chinese civil climate actions with the world. While COP29 has concluded, the commitment of the Chinese people to combating climate change remains unwavering. Looking ahead, Vanke Foundation will continue to collaborate with its partners, both at home and abroad, contributing Chinese wisdom and efforts toward achieving global climate goals as both an advocate and a doer.
